Owner vs. Renter

Have you ever heard the phrase "renting vs owning"? It's a common analogy used to describe two different approaches to life.

Everyone has problems and issues they routinely face in life, but many problems and issues are things that can be addressed and solved - IF you have the right mindset.

Renter’s Mindset vs Owner’s Mindset

The Impact on Personal Growth

Have you ever heard the phrase "renting vs owning"?  It's a common analogy used to describe two different approaches to life.  It’s important to understand the distinction between the renter’s mindset and the owner’s mindset in decision making and also when considering how each of these approaches impact personal growth.

The Renter’s Mindset

People with a renter’s mindset tend to think short-term and prioritize immediate comfort and convenience. They're less likely to take risks, make investments, and plan for the future.  They view life as temporary, and their priorities are often focused on immediate gratification.  If you find yourself placing blame on others or other outstanding circumstances, you’re living with a Renter’s Mindset.

Renters might want a better relationship with themself, a spouse, a sibling, a parent, a coworker…but they are unlikely to take action and do something to make a positive change.

Renters will often believe that life is too busy to prioritize their health, instead of determining what action they are going to take to put themselves first.

The Owner’s Mindset

People with an owner’s mindset think long-term and prioritize growth, stability, and security.  They're more likely to take calculated risks, make investments, and plan for the future. They view life as an opportunity to build something lasting, and their priorities are often focused on personal growth and development.

People with an owner’s mindset understand the situation they are in, what they did to cause it, and look for a solution.

Owner’s understand that no one is coming to save them; their success and failure is on their own shoulders. If there’s not enough time in the day to focus on their health, owner’s will adjust their schedule to make it happen, or look for other areas of health that aren’t time consuming, like nutrition.

The Secret

Everyone is a renter and an owner in specific situations and relationships. To determine where you stand in various capacities, here is an exercise you can do right now:

  1. Get out a blank piece of paper

  2. Draw a line down the middle and label one side “Owner” and the other “Renter”.

  3. Make a list of everything you can think of in life where you are an owner and where you are a renter.

Think:  relationship with self, relationship with kids, relationship with spouse, relationship with coworkers, health, fitness, work, home, education, mindset…any and all aspects of your life.

  4. Now take a step back and write down what your current goals are.  What are you looking to accomplish in the next year, 3 years, 5 years…in life?   The timeline doesn’t really matter, but a good place to start is the 3 - 5 year range.

  5. Compare the Renter’s list vs your goals:  do you see any places where your current mindset is going to hold you back from achieving success? This is the place to start taking action. You have identified a limiting factor that will impact your ability to accomplish your goal and now you can determine what needs to change.

When considering Renter’s vs. Owner’s, the real question to ask yourself is:  do you want to accomplish your goal(s) bad enough that you’re willing to change your behaviors and mindset?

Taking action and facing challenges is essential in achieving success and personal growth.  Success requires hard work and a willingness to take risks, and the only limits to our potential are the ones we impose on ourselves.

Everyone has problems and issues they routinely face in life, but many problems and issues are things that can be addressed and solved - IF you have the right mindset. An owner’s mindset is essential for personal growth and success. By prioritizing long-term goals and taking calculated risks, individuals with an owner’s mindset are better equipped to achieve their full potential and live fulfilling lives.  They understand that success requires hard work, dedication, and a willingness to take risks, and they're proactive in their approach to life. Owning your situation is the only way through and the only way to ultimately find success.  Take control of your life and adopt an owner’s mindset today - your future self will thank you.

Why Hire a Coach?

Want to achieve your fitness goals but need a little extra help?

Hiring a fitness coach can provide you with personalized guidance, expertise, and support to help you reach your goals.

Why Hire a Fitness Coach?

Achieving your fitness goals can be a challenging and difficult process - but hiring a fitness coach can make it easier and more effective. A coach can provide you with personalized guidance, accountability, and support to help you to reach your goals and make sustainable changes in your life.

Personalized guidance. A coach will work with you to create a customized exercise plan that is tailored to your specific goals, needs, and preferences. They will take into account your current fitness level, your goals, your schedule, and any health conditions or injuries you may have, to prescribe a plan that is realistic and achievable for you.

Expertise and knowledge. An experienced coach has the expertise and knowledge to help you safely and effectively reach your goals. They will apply the appropriate principles of exercise and nutrition, and will guide you to success, while avoiding common mistakes that can impede progress. They will also be able to teach you proper form and technique to prevent injury so you stay healthy and committed.

Accountability and motivation. Staying motivated throughout your fitness journey can be challenging.  Having a coach who has your back will keep you accountable and motivated to stick to your plan and make progress.

Doing it on your own is hard - it’s easy to break promises to ourselves, however, making a promise to a coach who has your best interests at heart and wants you to be successful, can make a huge difference!

They'll check in with you regularly, and keep you focused on prioritizing your health. They will also help you stay motivated and inspired, by providing encouragement, positive reinforcement, and helping you see your progress.

Progression and adaptation. There is so much nonsense information out in the fitness world that can be very confusing and often lead people to fail in reaching their goals.  Hiring a coach who will track your progress, create challenging and proven programming, and train you safely and effectively, is the key to success.  One of the major benefits of hiring an experienced coach who understands the specific adaptations necessary to achieve your desired results, is that they will monitor everything and adjust your plan as needed - all you need to do is show up and work!

Injury prevention. Preventing injury is an essential part of the coaching process.  An important part of a coach’s role is to teach proper form and technique to help you build strength, safely.

There is no “one size fits all” in fitness - you are unique, and deserve plans that are tailored specifically to you, and designed to achieve the results you want.

An experienced coach is able to create a program that takes into account any injuries, health conditions or limitations you may have, and provide you with a customized training experience so you can safely and effectively reach your goals.

Positive change. Exercise has the power to change your life, not only in terms of your physical fitness, but also in terms of your self-esteem, confidence, and overall well-being.  A coach can help you create positive changes and live a balanced, healthy lifestyle that will serve you well for years to come.  Fitness coaches are a huge asset to anyone who wants to improve their health and reach their goals with personalized guidance, expertise, and support.

How to THRIVE - Not Just Survive - During the Holidays

This is the time of year we often hear people talking about surviving the holidays.

What if we flipped the script? What if we focused on thriving through the holidays?

Words matter. Words shape perceptions. Perceptions shape intentions. Intentions shape just about everything.

This is the time of year we often hear people talking about surviving the holidays. We read about how to survive holiday parties, family gatherings, work parties - all sorts of festivities and events that we need to “push through” during this busy holiday season.

And let’s be honest, these survival guides are usually aimed at what we should not eat and drink over the holiday season— or how to “make up for” what we will consume. It’s kind of disheartening. It’s kind of discouraging. It definitely adds a layer of anxiety to what can already be a stressful season.

Aside from the fact that surviving is equated to deprivation or punishment - this is just a really harsh way to treat ourselves, to think about ourselves, to tackle the holiday season, and with respect to fueling our bodies. What are we surviving, really?

What if we flipped the script? What if we focused on thriving through the holidays?

Thrive by eating delicious food that makes you feel full and warm. Thrive by doing awesome workouts powered by that great food. Thrive by going for more walks outside in the fresh air. Thrive by enjoying the time you have with the people who mean the most in life.

What if we just enjoy these moments? What if we let the things we love to do—being with friends and family, eating well, moving with abandon and resting at the right times—take us through this holiday season?

What if we thrived?

Instead of this already stressful season becoming a time to deprive or punish ourselves, let’s focus on changing that. Make this holiday season enjoyable - let’s eat, drink, be merry (and move our bodies!)…THAT’S thriving. And isn’t that what we deserve?

We are here for you - we will guide you on your journey toward becoming your best self!

I’ve been in the fitness industry for a long time and nothing makes me happier than seeing a client succeed!  The goal doesn’t matter - it could be your first pull up, losing 10 pounds, losing 100 pounds, being able to squat pain free. What gets me excited and makes me happy is helping a client establish a goal and then helping them smash their goals and accomplish more than they ever thought possible!

I set out on a mission in 2009 when opening Romeo Athletics, and that mission is the same mission I’m on today:  to provide tried and true methods that deliver results, accomplish goals, and cut out the bullsh*t.

Our team at Romeo Athletics is an amazing group of individuals who have committed themselves to changing lives one day at a time.  Nothing fires this group up more than seeing a client taking the necessary steps to accomplish their goals.  Day by day, step by step, the commitment necessary to achieve amazing things is happening within the walls of Romeo Athletics and our team is here to hold you accountable.

The members of Romeo Athletics who find the most success are not necessarily the “fire breathing fitness studs” who live out their days under the barbell (we love you too!) - but your fitness background or current fitness levels do not play into your future success.  The biggest factor for our clients success is commitment to the process!  That’s all you need: commitment.

We will lead you through the workouts, design a nutrition plan that works for you, teach you about the healthy habits that will make you a happier person.  All you need to do is to commit to a plan, believe in the process, and take action!

At Romeo Athletics we believe that each person walking in our doors has an individualized goal to accomplish and that requires an individualized plan.  For some clients, this plan may need more accountability or exercise modification and personal training might be the best fit.  For some clients, they thrive in a high-energy atmosphere and group classes fit them best.  Two things are true for every client walking in the door:  they need to move everyday and eat a healthy diet.  So we have created multiple coaching options for exercise and nutrition

With the perfect plan, commitment, accountability, you can accomplish amazing things.  We see it happen everyday at Romeo Athletics!  We are here for you…to help you accomplish your goals, to help you change your life, to help you become the best version of yourself.

Do You Know How to Lift Safely?

Have you ever tweaked your back picking something up? Never again.

Everyone needs to know how to lift something off the ground to maintain strength and prevent injury.

We’ve all done it: gone to pick something up, felt a pop or a twinge and thought “Great, I just tweaked my back.” This is a common occurrence for many people, but I’d argue that it doesn’t have to be.

There is no getting around it, at some point, you will need to pick something up off of the ground. It might be shopping bags, a child, a dog, or anything - and you need to know how to do that safely.

We hear a lot of people talk about having “bad backs” or “lifting with their legs” when picking anything up, but what does that even mean? When you hear someone say “lift with your legs,” what they are encouraging is rather than bending over at your waist to pick something up, you bend your knees and use the muscles in your legs, not just your back.

While this will help, it really doesn’t encompass all that needs to happen.  To prevent hurting your back, you need to have a rigid torso. To obtain a rigid torso, first think about standing as tall as possible with your chest up; think about really good posture. From here, take a big breath in, hold that breath, and tighten your belly. The big fancy word for what you’re doing is creating intra-abdominal pressure. All that means is you are creating pressure within your torso that’s going to make you very strong and injury resistant.

With a rigid torso and proper mechanics, you will be able to alleviate and prevent pain while lifting anything

How do you do this while lifting a bag of groceries? Find your rigid spine position, stand tall with good posture, take a big breath in and tighten your belly. Then push your butt back and bend your knees — this will allow you to reach your bags safely with a nice flat back. Now you just need to stand tall while maintaining your back position. This sequence is the same for safely picking up a box, child, or pretty much anything else. Some objects are more awkward and provide a challenge, but you just need to remember your rigid spine position, push your butt back, and bend your knees.

A great coach will work on these mechanics with you to make sure you are strong and in a safe lifting position.

By working with a coach within the gym, you will engrain these positions so you won’t even need to think about them — it will just happen automatically because you use them so often. In addition to working on positions, a coach will lead you to gaining strength which will help keep you safe, reduce pain, and improve your life!

A lot of the back pain we see is often treatable and strength training can help prevent it. Our coaching staff has decades of experience and can confidently work on correct movement patterns that will both put you in a safe position and strengthen your body at the same time. Living with back pain or the fear of back pain doesn’t need to be a permanent situation, we can help you today!

Thank You!

Without you, we wouldn’t be able to help so many people get healthier!

Thank you, for allowing me to do what I love to do.  Without our members and our community we would not be able to provide people with trusted methods to accomplish their goals.

Without you, we would not have been able to change the lives of so many people.

We have helped people establish self confidence, helped members lose 1000’s of pounds, helped create lifelong friendships, helped create marriages, create careers, and change lives.  Without the support of our members, none of this would have been possible - thank you!

I opened Romeo Athletics in 2009 out of a one-car garage, and over the past 12 years we’ve grown into a much bigger location, evolved our offerings so we can meet anyone’s needs - from group classes, to personal training, to nutritional coaching - but we have always stayed true to my vision.

We are the guiding light in a sea full of confusion, false promises, and snake oil.  We offer tried and true methods that deliver results and change lives in the process.

Have you ever heard of the Perfect Day exercise?  It’s really simple:  imagine what your perfect day would look like with all of the details.  Where and when you are waking up, what you are eating for breakfast, where you are going for work...you map out a day that would be perfect, and also realistic. Romeo Athletics is a big part of my perfect day.

Everyday I get to go to a place where people are happy, encouraging, motivated, and working to accomplish big goals.

Everyone is supporting one another and to be in this atmosphere makes me so happy.  We live in a world filled with negativity and fear, where consumption is king and the only way to achieve perceived happiness is to consume more.  Inside the walls of Romeo Athletics, this is not true.  We are positive, we are not scared, we encourage you to look within to find what motivates you - and our job is to show you the path and hold you accountable.

The people within the walls of Romeo Athletics are what makes this place so special.

I cannot thank you enough for investing in yourself and becoming part of our community.  I am committed to helping each and every person who walks in our doors find success and create their own Perfect Day.

Motivated?

What do you need to find your motivation? A Coach!

Professional athletes are not more motivated than you are.

Olympians don’t just “want it more.”

The best athletes have the same struggles with motivation that you do.

What’s the difference?  They know how to get motivated (and what to do when they don’t feel motivated at all).

Ask anyone at the pinnacle of performance: Sometimes they don’t feel like working out.  And those folks with ripped abs?  They want a piece of pie.

So why do they work out anyway?  Why do they stick to their nutrition plan when things get tough?

Here’s a secret:  Almost all of them work with coaches.

Coaches are key to your success in any field but especially in fitness.  You need to be  accountable to an objective third party.  Your partner will let you off the hook, your coworkers don’t actually care if you succeed, and your friends don’t care if you change at all.

You need someone to:

• Remind you of your goals — the small ones you’ve accomplished and the big ones you’re working toward.

• Get you results FAST.

• Hold you accountable.  You can “ghost” someone over text, but you can’t miss  appointments.

• Provide a “pain” for failure.  That means you have to pay for Coaching.  If you  don’t, there’s no real penalty for failure … and you’ll backslide.

• Help you track everything: your workouts, your personal records, your food intake, your sleep and your wins.

• Remove the guesswork — provide tried and true methods to accomplish your goals!

Are you ready to try something new?  If you’ve struggled in the past but haven’t worked with a Coach, now is the time.  To find out how a Coach can help you accomplish your health and fitness goals FAST, book  a free consultation with us.

In our meeting, we’ll find out exactly what you want to accomplish, and then we’ll show you the perfect plan, and we’ll tell you how we can help you accomplish it.  If it looks good to you,  we’ll get started on working toward your goals together.

Remember: Doing it alone is hard.  Doing it with a Coach is much easier—and more fun!  We’d love to work with you.
